Welcome aboard, fellow explorers, to the mystical realm of the Kornati Islands, Croatia's best-kept treasure chest nestled within the azure embrace of the central Adriatic Sea. With over 140 islands and islets waiting to be discovered, the Kornati archipelago invites seasoned sailors and nature enthusiasts alike to embark on a journey filled with awe-inspiring landscapes, ancient tales, and marine marvels. And hey, did you know these islands are so special they got the 'national park' stamp of approval in 1980?
Unearth the Mysteries of the Past
Step back in time as we uncover the rich tapestry of history woven into the fabric of the Kornati Islands. From the majestic Tureta Fortress, a relic from the Byzantine Empire's heyday in the 6th century, to the echoes of ancient civilizations lingering in Illyrian settlements and Roman ruins, these islands have tales to tell that'll make even Poseidon jealous.
Tureta Fortress - The Guardian of the Seas: Behold the mighty Tureta Fortress, standing tall and proud like a sentinel guarding the secrets of the deep blue. Built by the crafty Byzantines back in the day, this fortress once ruled the waves of the archipelago, keeping a watchful eye over passing ships and swashbuckling adventures. Today, it offers visitors a glimpse into the region's storied past and panoramic views fit for a king (or queen) of the seas.
Fun Facts:
- Inhabited for thousands of years, with signs of ancient civilization in cave dwellings.
- Efforts to restore the islands' lush greenery, lost during Illyrian times, are ongoing, proving that even paradise needs a little TLC sometimes.
- With over 650 plant species and a diverse array of birdlife, the Kornati archipelago is Mother Nature's own masterpiece, showcasing her artistic prowess in every nook and cranny.
- Dominant winds include bura (north-easterner), maestral (north-westerner), and jugo (south-easterner), shaping the region's climate and sailing conditions.
- The Kornati Islands enjoy between 2600 and 2700 sunshine hours annually, with mild winters and sunny summers.
- There is a legend about the Kornati Islands: The famous Irish Nobel Prize winner George Bernard Shaw once wrote: “On the last day of Creation God desired to crown His work and thus created Kornati Islands out of tears, stars and breath”. According to the legend, on the last day of Creation, God threw the remaining white rocks into the sea. When he looked at what he got, he remained enchanted and concluded that there is nothing that should be changed. Now that's what we call a divine destination!
